Elderly people

The elderly in Ukraine are suffering terribly. War has taken their livelihoods, and many have simply nowhere to go. Their insufficient pensions barely cover food or heating, and there is little to no support to help them. Alone and struggling, they are forced to endure conditions no one should face. After a lifetime of hard work, they have been left with nothing. They deserve warmth, dignity, and the basic right to live in peace. They need help - now. The world must not turn away.
-
People over 60 make up nearly 25% of Ukraine’s population.
-
Many older people are unable to flee, facing a high risk of injury or death.
-
Destroyed homes force elderly to rent, but high rental costs are unaffordable on low pensions.
-
War budget leaves the government unable to assist with housing or financial aid.
-
80% of older Ukrainians live below the poverty line. War has deepened their suffering.
-
Half of Ukrainian pensioners receive $82 or less per month, making survival nearly impossible.
-
Elderly women face greater hardship than men, receiving pensions that are, on average, 30% lower - amounting to about $60 per month - pushing them far below the poverty line.
-
1.5 million elderly Ukrainians have disabilities, making evacuation and survival even harder.
-
140,000 residential buildings destroyed, leaving 3.5 million people homeless.
-
Over 80 elderly and disability institutions are in heavily war-affected regions.
These are the people who gave their lives and health to hard work, serving society. They deserve safety and care, yet they are left to suffer in misery.
AVIDES “Help for Ukraine” is committed to supporting this vulnerable part of society with donations and essential supplies. But we cannot do it alone. That’s why we actively engage with our business partners, encouraging them to stand with Ukraine’s elderly in any way possible. Many businesses have the means to help - what’s needed is the courage to take that first step.
