Abandoned Animals in Ukraine

The issue of stray animals in Ukraine existed long before the full-scale war, often overlooked and unaddressed. However, Russia’s invasion has drastically worsened the crisis, leading to a surge in abandoned pets. Some animals are directly harmed by shelling, while others lose their homes and owners due to the chaos of war.

Since the war began, the number of animals in shelters and under the care of volunteers has skyrocketed - rising by 30% in rear areas, 60% among volunteer caregivers, and over 100% in frontline shelters. Most of these animals are pets left behind during evacuations. Many fleeing families had no choice but to leave their beloved animals behind, as they lacked the means or opportunity to take them along.

The total number of pets that lost their homes remains unknown, but animal welfare experts estimate it to be well over 100,000. Meanwhile, shelters near the frontline have seen their animal populations double, all while facing severe shortages of resources. As many Ukrainians have been forced to flee, shelters have seen a sharp decline in donations - their primary source of support."

Urgent Needs of Abandoned Animals:

    • Safe and warm shelter to protect them from harsh weather and dangerous conditions.

    • Food supply – on average, dogs need 300g of food per day, while cats need 150g.

    • Veterinary care, including rabies vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and essential medical treatment.

    • Heating and power solutions, such as generators and heaters for shelters struggling through cold winters.

    • Transportation equipment, including cages and carriers to safely move animals to shelters or medical care.

Our MissionWe are working with local volunteers, shelters, and veterinary clinics to care for abandoned animals. Our goal is to provide shelters with food, generators, heaters, vaccines, medicines, cages and carriers for transportation - ensuring these animals receive the care, warmth, and protection they so desperately need
